I have done some of my best fishing in years when I discovered Berkley Gulp Alive baits. I have always had good luck with the line of Power Baits that Berkley developed many years ago, but I was truly surprised with the results I was getting when using the new Gulp Alive brand of baits.

I have always enjoyed the thrill of fishing with artificial lures, mostly because you stand a much better chance of getting a good size fish to hit an artificial lure, and I normally leave live bait fishing to my kids so they can catch pan fish all day long. But perhaps my one complaint using artificial lures was the amount of times I would miss a fish due to a short strike where I could not set the hook in time.

It is with this in mind that I set out one afternoon last fall with a new can of Berkley Gulp Alive leeches and twister tails. I rigged them up and proceeded to fish areas that I know hold large bass. What ensued was one of my better days on the water in quite some time. For some reason the new formula of these baits really encourages fish to hold on to them for much longer periods of time. I was not getting short strikes, and in fact, had ample time to set hooks on hit each.

My only complaint is the fish had a tendency to swallow the bait rather quickly, making hook retrieval an adventure every time. A good set of needle nose pliers, though, and I was able to successfully catch and release double digit bass in one afternoon of fishing action.

I really enjoyed my experience fishing with these Berkley Gulp Alive baits. I was catching more quality fish and missing far fewer because of the tendency to hold on to the bait for longer periods of time.

I have written more reviews, and give more information on how to fish these wonderful baits over at my website – click here to visit: Berkley Gulp Alive.

Trout Fishing Lures You Can Use
By Harold Brown Oneal

People are always yapping about how great the outdoors is after a weekend off. How grand the serene is and how captivating the mountain-clear stream is. To top it off, how they enjoyed the camp fire after catching a large Trout for dinner with beer to fill their palates.

Did I mention camp fire Trout dinner and beer in one sentence?

Perhaps it’s time to get your butt off to the wilds rather than lounging around on a weekend. Trout’s are game fishes related to the salmon and are very delectable whatever recipe you follow. Be it pan-fried or stuffed baked, or even grilled foiled-wrap in camp fires, these fishes are what fishing and camping is all about. It’s one thing to cook them; it’s another to catch them.

Catching that meal of trout means using the most effective lure. It may be that expensive synthetic lure or just that ordinary worm you caught on your way to the fishing site. Whatever works best for you, use it. At any rate, below is the type of lures. Check whatever suits your fancy.

1) Flat Fish.
For quite some time now, flatfish lures has been getting the job done in hauling the trout for professional and recreational fishermen. This type of lure has a unique shape and creates a swimming action making it hard for other lures to replicate. Flatfish lures entail tying a swivel on the tip of the fishing line and attaching the flatfish lure on its clasp. Once this is done, you’re now ready to cast that fishing rod.

2) Spoon.
What’s in a name? You guess it right. This type of lure is shape like a spoon. This is made of glistening metallic plate shaped liked the ordinary spoon bowl. Of course, a fish hook is attached to it. Without the hook, the only way the spoon gets near a trout is when the trout is served for supper. Oblong and concave in nature, this type of lure is a favorite for some fishermen. The reflecting light and the random movement are perfect for attractive lure; making the trout a sucker of it.

3) Minnow Plugs.
Some fishermen are a fan of this kind of lure and are must-haves for their tackle box. These kinds of lures are so versatile. Floating minnow plugs work well in small, clear streams. For deeper current, crank baits and sinking minnow plugs work well under these conditions. While different sizes abound for this kind of lure, keep in mind that you are catching a fish and/or a trout specifically. The lure should be made to look more natural and should not exceed what a trout could chum in one bite.

4) In-line spinners.
Ask any trout fisherman and they’ll be one in saying that in-line spinners are one of their perennial favorite. The traditional willow shaped blade will create the necessary flash to entice the largest and the most finicky trout in the lake. The weight of this bait also helps a great deal as this bait gets into the flow of the water faster than most other baits around.

pn*L) be somewhat difficult because you want to avoid breaking your lure. Most of the rooster tails are about 3 to 4 inches in length.

Typically the trout fishermen cast upstream when spin fishing. They will also cast up and across depending on the speed of the current within the body of water. The most important rule to follow is: “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. And if it is broke, keep trying something until it works.”

Did you know that the blanks used in fishing rods are made of composite or impregnated carbon fibers?

It is after going through a lengthy process and a high cost that they are eventually produced at a chemical factory and not by the hands of a rod builder.

It has been seen that these blanks rather than making fishing rods actually end up predominantly being used in automobile and aerospace industries.

Can Be Both
The blanks are commonly known as carbon composites or graphite. If you were to view one of these blanks at the atomic level each individual particle would be identified as carbon. The composite is formed when two or more materials are blended together to give the blank certain desired characteristics which in our case was to make it tough. The molecular pattern shows graphite. So it can be named composite as well as graphite.

Composite For Fishing Blanks
Companies use the composites to make fishing blanks. There are many kinds available and each company will decide depending upon the blank’s composition, requirement, and weight per square meter, orientation and content of resin their final destination. The important thing to remember is that the carbon in these composites is actually in the graphite form making it right for a raw material for the fishing blanks which need to be strong and resistant to force.

Composite of Composites
Fishing blanks are made using carbon composites and other materials which are added like ceramic, glass fibers, or boron to make separate coatings. More than one or two such preparations are used to make different parts of the rod.

High Modulus and Force
Among the many carbon fibers chosen to make fishing rods the ones with higher modulus and strength are the best as they are able to pile more energy and discharge it. Modulus can be calculated with the stiffness and the weight of the graphite blank.

What is Modulus?
Modulus is the energy measured with the speed and the power of the rod. It is similar in nature to jumping off a diving board. The force makes it move up and down according to the jump. Also, a fishing blank which has a “modulus” is highly priced and is flimsy to use.

Remember This
If you intend to make custom rods, be warned that your rods will need high tech machines which will make the designing, heating, pressurizing and cooling easy while combining the use of an economical modulus. So this is not going to get done by anybody else than professionals.

Buying good quality blanks from the producers could help you out. If you are interested in bamboo rods, then Tonkin cane is what you need. Take care to maintain control over processing to get the desired taper and action.

This article will outline the 5 best lures to use when fishing and some tips and techniques for using them. These lures aren’t being listed haphazardly either, they are all effective and all have their place in any serious fisherman’s repertoire. These lures are great to use when fishing and have proven themselves to be effective through more than fifty years of combined personal fishing experience.

The number of options available to us when it comes to fishing lures is astronomical, but these 5 are certainly, at the very least, among the best 5 lures to use when fishing. There are many factors that go into making a fishing lure effective, but none is more important that the knowledge of the angler, and knowledge comes from practice, so the more time that can be spent on the water fishing, the better.

In any case these 5 lures need to be in your tackle box and at your disposal anytime that you are fishing. Let’s get down to business, shall we?

The Jitterbug – The Jitterbug is among the most poplar top water fishing lures of all time and should be available to you when fishing. If I could have only 1 top water lure, the Jitterbug would be it. When retrieved this lure makes a “gurgling” sound that fish find irresistible. The key to fishing this lure is to retrieve it very slowly to create the lures well know “wobble” and “gurgle” sound.

The Rapala Floating Minnow – This minnow imitation has been around for more than 75 years and imitates a minnow as well as any fishing lure on the market. The Rapala floating minnow is easy to fish and certainly among the best lures to use when fishing, especially where live minnows are a natural bait fish.

The KickTail Minnow – The KickTail Minnow, much like the Rapala floating minnow is very easy to fish and also extremely effective. The difference between the two lures is that the KickTail imitates a shad as well as any lure on the market, rather than a minnow. The KickTail is definitely one of the best lures to use when fishing, especially where shad are a prominent bait fish.

The Fat Rap – The Fat Rap is also made by Rapala, but is a diving crankbait. You need to have a diving crank bait available when fishing and the Fat Rap is among the best fishing lures to have. This fishing lure is easy to fish and is avaialble in extremely realistic bait fish color patterns. Add a Fat Rap or two to your tackle box to use when you need to fish in a bit deeper water.

That Rat-L-Trap – The Rat-L-Trap is made by Bill Lewis lures and is the pinnacle when it comes to rattling crankbaits. Rat-L-Trap’s make a lot of noise under the water which is great for stained or muddy water situations. The bottom line is that these fishing lures are effective and should be available when fishing, especially when fishing in less than perfect water clarity.

Although all of these lures are “crank baits” they are all different and are all effective for various fishing situations and scenarios. If you could have only 5 lures for fishing, having only these 5 would be a great way to go. These lures are definitely among the 5 best lures to use when fishing in almost any freshwater fishing situation.

There are a variety of places where you can pick up affordable materials to construct excellent fishing lures. You can order them online or simply visit your local Walmart. There are also an unlimited number of sites on the internet which provide instruction on how to construct your favorite lures.

Now as far as bass fishing goes anglers like to use some type of bass bug. This type of lure usually resembles some type of minnow, small fish or frog. They can also resemble some type of insect such as a dragonfly, butterfly or grasshopper or bug that has fallen into the water and now has the potential to be an easy meal.

These types of insects float and kick around on the surface so when you create your imitation also remember to mimic their movements. This will make you a better angler by showing you how they land and how they maneuver on the surface of the water. If you monitor these insects or bugs you will also gain an understanding of the time of day and weather conditions to use them. In other words you have to think like a bug.

One of the favorite meals of bass as well as walleye and pike are frogs and you can easily make them out of wood or cork but you will have to load some weight to the cork if you intend to do any casting.

There are several different ways to dress up your newly created masterpiece. If it has a wood or cork body it is recommended to use enamels or lacquers. You might want to try dipping the body several times in your selected color. Thin coats are best. Other suggested methods are to use an air brush or fast drying paint that model airplane builders use.

Don’t forget to put in some eyes. You can paint them on or use glass eyes or some sort of decal, but you must have them.
Tip: I even paint them on my icefishing spoons.

Some of the tools you will need include small drill bits, assortment of weights (I wouldn’t recommend lead), hammer, epoxy glue, sandpaper, small screws, assortment of treble and single hook and beads.

There is more to fishing than just grabbing a fishing pole and heading to the nearest body of water. First and foremost you need to acquire your fishing license. After that task is complete, you can start assembling your fishing gear.

If you are sitting there scratching your head and wondering what fishing gear is than you definitely need to keep reading this article. Fishing will become a lot more fun when you have the right equipment. This might require you to open up your wallet and part with some money, all in all your fishing gear shouldn’t cost more than a hundred dollars, which is a small price to pay when you think of the bigger picture.

Selecting the rod and reel are the first steps to assembling your fishing gear. Some rods are sold whole, while others you will have to assemble. If you are panicking about that prospect, don’t fret. All it takes is merely screwing the pieces of the rod together. Once the rod is assembled correctly with the guides perfectly matched up, you need to get a feel for your rod. Hold it, bend it, and make sure that the size and weight is something that you are comfortable with.

Now you will need some fishing line to go with your rod and reel. There are so many choices when it comes to fishing lines. You can’t go wrong choosing a four pound line, if you are still unsure, just make sure that it is 10 feet long and it will fit a basic rig.

Selecting the right lures and bait becomes a little tricky. The first thing a new angler should do is consider what species of fish he or she is most likely seeking. Once you have determined that, it is time to do a little research using books, forums and articles, gathering as much information as possible. Otherwise you will spend a lot of money on fishing gear that you don’t really need and probably will never use.

Tips to a successful fishing trip

Fishing with bait

The most popular bait to use is worms, although some fishermen prefer to use chicken or liver. Just make sure that your bait is cold this prevents it from sliding off the hook.

Next you need to obtain a weight. Try using a bait sinker or a number two hook if you are just starting out.

Using a swivel prevents the sinker from sliding. For example you could put a bead between the weight and the swivel to protect your knot.

Where to find fishing bait

You can buy your bait or catch your bait for free. The advantage of buying it is that you have all that you need, but the disadvantage is you could get stuck paying a hefty price for it.

Earthworms are strongly recommended to use as bait, it almost guarantees a catch.

There are three basic methods of fishing. First is drift fishing, where you allow your line to drift in the current. This can be done for upstream or downstream fishing. Second is plunking, this is where you use a weight to keep the bait in place after casting. Lastly is back bouncing where you lift the rod up one or two feet and then let the lure settle back down while reeling your line in slightly keeping it taut.

As you can see, there is a lot of time and effort put into fishing. It is not just grabbing any old rod and going to the lake. If you do your research and follow these helpful hints, then your first fishing trip is guaranteed to be a success.

Now that the world is becoming more aware of the effects of pollution on the environment, going green has become a growing trend. Yes folks it even applies to fishing.

Wondering how?

Well that is exactly what this article is going to outline for you.

There are essentially only two types of soft bait lures, those made from plastic and those made from biodegradable materials.

Unlike soft plastic fishing lures some bait manufactureres are now creating soft baits that decompose in the environment by using bacteria. However, the most beneficial aspect of these baits is that fish are also able to digest it.

Using biodegradable lures instead of soft plastic ones has many advantages.

The advantage to anglers would be the fact that they catch fish!

The biodegradable lures have a soft, natural feel that fish perceive as food, thus they hold onto it for that extra second it takes to set the hook.

Another big advantage is the fact that, when the biodegradable lures break off, they decompose.

Soft plastic lures are not only polluting the waters, because they don’t decompose, they are also being ingested by fish where the lures are being lodged in their gastrointestinal tract.

Also, the plastic that they are made up of is said to cause liver damage and other problems for the freshwater fish.
Now just think about this, imagine that you have just caught a prize winning fish and you take it home to clean it, only to discover that it is full of soft plastic lures.

Wouldn’t that put you off just a little bit considering the fact that it is hard for fish to pass these lures through their digestive tracts and the fact that the plastic causes health problems in the fish.

I know I would think twice about eating one of those fish.

Using biodegradable lures will not only cut down on the amount of pollution from lures found in the waters, it is also minimizes the hazardous effects to the fish.

Di you know that some European governments have already banned the use of soft plastic baits. In fact there is a growing movement to ban non biodegradable bait containers like styrofoam due to the increasing number of bait containers found discarded in our waterways.

So come on anglers wake up and jump on the green bandwagon and do your part by using lead free lures, eco sinkers, biodegrabale baits and fishing line.

Go out and get yourself some biodegradable fishing lures.
