Humminbird Smartcast Portable Review
Humminbird SmartCast Portable Fish Finder Review
By Iain Loveman
It doesn’t matter but it seems that everywhere you go you are surrounded by portable electronic devices whether it be phones, television or GPS units. The magic of it all is that you can use these portable devices just about anywhere, any time and generally in a matter of moments.
| The Humminbird Smartcast is pretty basic stuff, just a remote sonar sensor and a receiver.
Just turn it on, send the sensor out and watch your portable display. What you receive back is a readout of the depth of the water, the terrain below and of course any fish that comes in range. The Humminbird Smartcast Portable won’t help you catch that fish that’s up to you. After all you have to have some of the fun. It will however tell you whether you are wasting your time. After all if there aren’t any fish in the area isn’t that exactly what you are doing. |
Ok, so you’ve got the sonar sensor located where you want it and you’re looking at the topography below which covers a range of 100 feet and a depth of 100 feet. Remember though that with any sonar device these readings are dependent on a lot of factors such as the clarity of the water or whether it’s fresh water or salt water. But for such a small portable device it is pretty impressive.
Well, maybe not that impressive, after all you only shelled out a hundred bucks or so, not several hundred or a thousand for a color fish finder, GPS unit with all the bells and whistles (e.g. pre-loaded maps, GPS or dual beam technology).
Just remember what I said at the beginning about the magic of moment.
Several words of caution: If the remote sonar sensor does happen to come loose, the chase will be on. Also, remember that once you have finished fishing for the day to give the sensor base a wipe and turn it off before you put it away because if you don’t and you treat it like a toy you will probably kill the battery and when you need it the most, you will be … well you know the rest
SmartCast RF25 mounts directly to a fishing rod for ulimate portability and simplicity.
