Is it a fishing boat or a fishing vessel?

A fishing vessel by short definition is a ship or boat used to catch fish in the sea, lake or river.

Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size and they are engaged in a variety of activities such as the transport (people or goods), fishing, entertainment, public safety, and warfare.

A boat on the otherhand is a watercraft designed to float or plane on water and provide transport over it. Usually this water will be inland (lakes) or in protected coastal areas. In naval terms, a boat is something small enough to be carried aboard another vessel (a ship).

There are many different kinds of vessels used in both commercial fishing and in recreational fishing.

Parts Of A Fishing Vessel

The earliest fishing vessels were rafts, canoes and small boats and their intended use was for short distances from a shoreline, so we will refer to them as boats. Now, prior to the 1950’s there was little standardisation of fishing boats. Designs would vary between ports and boatyards. These traditional boats were built out of wood but wood is not often used now because of cost and the difficulty in obtaining suitable lumber. Fibreglass is used increasingly in smaller fishing boats, while steel is usually used on vessels above 25 metres.

Now, when it comes to accessories on industrial fishing boats or recreational fishing boats you will find them similiar in nature and these fishing boat accessories are installed aside from the primary parts of the fishing vessel. Many accessories such as lights, horns, emergency radio, fish finders and GPS navigation require electricity to function. Accessories which you would include on a recreational fishing vessel are fishing rods, fishing racks.

One of the major components standard to either of these fishing vessels is emergency equipment. Each size of vessel is required to carry a mandatory setup such as life vests, signaling systems (flares, horn, whistle), bailing bucket, etc.

In Canada by the end of the year 2009 all boaters must have a Boater License, obtained by taking a boater competency course.
