If you are an angler who fishes on a regular basis you know how expensive it can be to stock an assortment of lures for every species and for every occasion. The easiest way to help reduce the cost and actually make you a better angler is to make your own fishing lures.
There are a variety of places where you can pick up affordable materials to construct excellent fishing lures. You can order them online or simply visit your local Walmart. There are also an unlimited number of sites on the internet which provide instruction on how to construct your favorite lures.
Now as far as bass fishing goes anglers like to use some type of bass bug. This type of lure usually resembles some type of minnow, small fish or frog. They can also resemble some type of insect such as a dragonfly, butterfly or grasshopper or bug that has fallen into the water and now has the potential to be an easy meal.
These types of insects float and kick around on the surface so when you create your imitation also remember to mimic their movements. This will make you a better angler by showing you how they land and how they maneuver on the surface of the water. If you monitor these insects or bugs you will also gain an understanding of the time of day and weather conditions to use them. In other words you have to think like a bug.
One of the favorite meals of bass as well as walleye and pike are frogs and you can easily make them out of wood or cork but you will have to load some weight to the cork if you intend to do any casting.
There are several different ways to dress up your newly created masterpiece. If it has a wood or cork body it is recommended to use enamels or lacquers. You might want to try dipping the body several times in your selected color. Thin coats are best. Other suggested methods are to use an air brush or fast drying paint that model airplane builders use.
Don’t forget to put in some eyes. You can paint them on or use glass eyes or some sort of decal, but you must have them.
Tip: I even paint them on my icefishing spoons.
Some of the tools you will need include small drill bits, assortment of weights (I wouldn’t recommend lead), hammer, epoxy glue, sandpaper, small screws, assortment of treble and single hook and beads.
If you decide to make this a serious hobby then some of the must have tools include split ring pliers, round nose pliers, flat nose pliers, wire cutters, gate cutters, table top wire bender and a skirt making tool.
