Northern pike are one of the most powerful and aggressive fresh water fish that you can fish for. Not only are they exciting to catch, northern pike can grow extremely big with some fish longer than 40 inches and weighing 15 to 25 pounds.
Some pike can grow even bigger, although any pike over 30 inches is considered a nice fish and should weigh between 5 and 7 pounds.
Many
fishermen plan fishing trips to catch northern pike every year. The best lakes are located in the northern United States and in Canada.
Some of the best northern pike fishing destinations in the United States are Lake of the Woods, Mille Lacs Lake, Leech Lake and Lake Vermilion.
These 4 lakes are all located in Minnesota.
In Canada, some of the top lakes for northern pike are Lake of the Woods, Red Lake, Eagle Lake and Lac Seul.
Let's take a look at these destinations.
Lake of the Woods, MN - Lake of the Woods is located on the border of Minnesota and Canada. This lake has many big northern pike in the 36 to 40 inch range.
Mille Lacs Lake, MN - Minnesota's second largest lake at 132,000 surfaces acres, is known more for the walleye fishery, but there are plenty of northern pike here.
Leech Lake, MN - This lake has a healthy population of northern pike and you will usually catch a few of them while fishing for walleye. If you target northern pike, you can do very well on this lake. Find the weed edges and you will catch some pike.
Lake Vermilion, MN - 1,200 miles of shoreline and 365 islands should give you plenty of water to fish on Lake Vermilion. This lake has lots of big fish in the 10 to 15 pound range.
Lake of the Woods, Canada - In Canada, Lake of the Woods offers some tremendous fishing. There are plenty of resorts on the lake and it isn't too far of a drive across the border. This is a good lake for catching a trophy fish.
Eagle Lake, Canada - Eagle Lake is slightly farther north from the Minnesota border. Big fish and lots of them in this lake, although it is not as popular as Lake of the Woods, Lac Seul or Red Lake.
Lac Seul, Canada - You will travel farther north to get here, but it is well worth the trip. You should be able to catch lots of fish with trophy-sized pike mixed in.
Red Lake, Canada - This might be the best drive-in lake for catching huge pike. It's far north, but well worth the drive.
